Cut It Out

The ripped denim and cutout legging trend has been everywhere. This trend has now spread over to other items such as tops, dresses, shoes, etc. as well. I personally love cutout details on everything. I already mentioned being excited about destroyed denim back in April, so I'm guessing it's not a surprise to anyone that this is another one of my favorite current trends. The rips make these items perfect to wear for the Summer and they looks sexy too. Cutout details will keep you cool no matter how hot it gets. That's what's so great about this trend and is probably the reason many celebrities have been sporting cutout details as well. This look has also been seen all over the runways and fashion magazines. To get the look of a rock star, grab a cutout top and pair it with either a bleached denim mini-skirt or some jeans with exposed zippers, hoop earrings, and studded shoes. For a date, wear a cutout dress with a pair of high heels, some chandelier earrings, and a bow necklace. Cutout shoes would look good worn with a sundress, some bangles, and a floppy hat. For a cute Summer look wear some cutout jewelry with a tank top, a pair of shorts, and flip flops. Keep Cool In Coral

In my last blog post, I wrote about how blue was a major color trend for the Summer of 2009. Well, coral is also a hot color this Summer. Coral can vary in shades of orange, pink, and red. It is a great Summer color since it is reminiscent of the sunset and radiates a feeling of warmth. One hot look on the runways and in fashion magazines has been mixing coral with shades of blue (particularly turquoise and teal). As I stated before, pairing coral with shades of blue is a very popular look this season. My recomendation would be denim, of course, since denim goes with almost anything. Since it's Summer, I would suggest pairing a coral top with denim shorts or a denim mini-skirt. You can also wear a coral top with jeans on a cooler day. A coral jacket would also be nice with a pair of jeans. Grab a pair of faux denim leggings to wear with a coral dress or coral tunic (a look that's going to be very much in style for the Fall). Wear a pair of coral shorts with a denim vest. A coral skirt would look great paired with a denim jacket. Coral accessories such as jewelry, shoes, handbags, etc. can also be matched with denim or other variants of blue like teal or turquoise. Summertime Blues

While purple was the hot color for the Winter of 2008, blue has taken over for the Summer of 2009. Although purple still remains my favorite color, I do think blue is also a very nice color and it looks good on just about everybody. Blue is a lot like black in that respect. Only blue actually has one advantage over black. While black is slimming and flattering on all body types, if you have a pale complexion like I do, it has a tendency to wash you out and make you look even paler. Blue looks good with all skin tones. If you're fair-skinned and find that darker shades of blue wash you out the same way that black does, you can always opt for a lighter shade. You really can't go wrong this season because whether you go with cobalt, turquoise, royal, aqua, midnight, etc., all shades of blue are in right now. Another nice thing about blue is the fact it's such a calming color. Blue represents tranquility, so wearing it just gives you a serene feeling. Arm Candy

Continuing with the Summer of 2009's statement jewelry trend, I'm going to write about bangle bracelets this time. Bangles are traditionally worn in India and Pakistan as a symbol of matrimony. Well, right now they're a hot trend and you don't even have to be married to wear them! If you're wondering what bangles look like, they are inflexible (unlike most bracelets) and usually round. There are bangles that are thick and chunky. The chunky kind are usually worn alone. There are also thinner bangles. The thinner ones are often sold in sets and the sets are typically worn stacked on the wrist. I must say, this is my favorite current jewelry trend (I like to wear my bangles stacked on both of my wrists). Cream Of The Crop

If you watched MTV back in the late 90's or early 2000, then you will definitely remember that crop tops were one of the hottest fashion trends at that time. Pop singers like Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera (who were both new faces on MTV during this period) practically lived in them. These tops were also worn by the Spice Girls during their height of fame in the late 90's. Other names for this type of top include belly shirt, half shirt, midriff top, and cutoff shirt. Well, whatever you want to call it, it's officially back for the Summer of 2009. In case you're still not sure exactly what a crop top is, it is a shirt that is cut shorter than an ordinary shirt would be. The length of this type of shirt can vary. It can be cut so short that it is the same length as the bra you're wearing or it can be cut off a little bit so that only a sliver of skin is exposed between the top and pants/skirt you're wearing. The bellybutton may or may not be exposed depending on what length you choose to go with; what you pair with this shirt will also make a difference in how much of your stomach is exposed (low-rise jeans will reveal a lot more than high-waisted pants will). If you don't feel comfortable with showing your stomach, you can still wear a crop top without having to worry about that. Just grab a tank top or camisole and layer your crop top over it. You can also wear a crop top over a long-sleeved shirt or sweater during the Winter. Another way to make a crop top look more modest would be to pair it with some high-waisted pants (as suggested above) or with a high-waisted skirt; you may even be able to tuck the shirt into your skirt or pants if it's long enough. You can also try this out with some high-waisted shorts for the Summer; however, if you chose to wear this kind of top without layering it or pairing it with a high-waisted bottom, be careful. Outside of MTV, Hollywood, and the runways; this trend can be very difficult to pull off. It also only really works in certain environments; I would say the beach or gym would be the best places to wear a belly shirt. You should also be able to get away with this type of shirt at a club or bar. Crop tops are definitely not appropriate for work or job interviews though; I don't think they work so much for school either (especially if your school has a dress code). If you want to wear a crop top but are not sure if it's appropriate for what you're about to do or the place you're about to go, remember that you'll always be safe if you layer it over something. If you wish to wear a belly shirt but don't have the money to spend on the ones above, you can make your own. Just take a t-shirt or tank top that you won't mind sacrificing and cut the bottom of it off (be careful not to cut off too much though). A Run In Your Stockings

Even though it's Summer now, are you finding it difficult to give up your leggings that you were wearing during the cold Winter days? Well, you may not have to. Leggings are definitely not going anywhere as far as trends go. However, the hot July weather might make it harder to wear them right now. But there is a solution to this dilemma. It seems that the shredded denim trend has spread over to leg wear. So now you can just rip up your leggings with a cheese grater or a pair of scissors and thus will be able to wear them no matter how hot it gets. The holes in your leg wear should keep you from sweating like crazy. Also, don't throw away any of your tights that have a run in them. Just add more! If you can't stand the thought of destroying your own leggings, then don't worry about it. You can wear pre-ripped leg wear this Summer instead. Take a look at some of these styles below.

To look like a rock star, wear these leggings with a destroyed denim miniskirt, a Rock & Roll graphic t-shirt, a rhinestone belt, some hoop earrings, and a pair of studded shoes. For a grunge-inspired look, wear your ripped leggings with a plaid shirt dress and a pair of sneakers. To add a tough edge to a feminine look, pair these leggings with a shift dress or tunic top with girly details such as ruffles or butterfly prints, some ballet flats, and a flower hair accessory. For a fun Summer look, wear your destroyed leggings with shorts, a tank top, and a pair of flip flops. New Ways To Wear A Necklace

2fers and layering were very popular this winter. Since it's currently nice and warm outside, there really is no reason to layer right now (although wearing tank tops or vests over short-sleeved shirts is still a very cool look). I've recently spotted a new trend that seems to be Summer's answer to the 2fer: necklace tops. These are tops that either come with necklaces or have the necklaces attached to them. There are also necklace halters which have necklaces that go around the neck instead of the usual strings you would tie around your neck. Necklace dresses are in style too. For the tops that come with necklaces that can be unattached, you can remove the necklace and wear it with a different top. You can also try attaching a different necklace to the top. Also, don't be afraid to pair other accessories with your necklace top or dress. Try adding some bangle bracelets (article on bangles coming soon), hoop or chandelier earrings, some rings, and a flower or feather hair accessory for a fun Summer look.
